I’m stoked. By this time next week, I’ll be off to Frankfurt to take part in a presentation at the world’s biggest book fair.

Live-Drawing The presentation, in which I’ll be live-drawing (yikes!), marks the launch of the German edition of my co-authored book Quirky Quarks: A Cartoon Guide to the Fascinating Realm of Physics (Springer, 2016). A sketchbook is a place to work things out, think things through, try out new techniques, experiment and….play!

For all you cartoonists, illustrators, art journal enthusiasts, aspiring artists and writers, here’s a little video I made that I hope will inspire and encourage you to have more fun with your sketchbook.

Filling Pages and Time Traveling: The Benefits of the Everyday Sketchbook

We all know the benefits of keeping a daily sketchbook. Practicing drawing, writing, and cartooning every day will help to make you a better artist. Even mindless doodling has been proven to be a healthy exercise for the mind. Personally I owe a lot to my everyday sketchbook. It’s really helped to make me better at what I do— not to mention that it’s a good place to harvest and develop ideas. But there are a couple of not so obvious benefits.
