What Does A Comic Strip Character Do Outside Of The Strip?

Do you ever wonder what the lives of comic strip characters are like off the page? I mean, what do they do when they’re not inside the little boxes entertaining readers? You might say this is an absurd thing to wonder about. Comic strip characters aren’t real. Off the page they don’t exist. And that’s true. But doesn’t the fact that they do exist — at least on the page, and in the minds of the cartoonist and readers — give them some sort of reality?

In the old days people used to throw tomatoes at performers. Today, people don’t throw tomatoes, they go online and hurl comments.

Which form of insult would you say is more civilized — the tomato bomb, or the malicious message?

(By comments I mean everything that’s said by readers online about a cartoon. By tomatoes I mean those mushy red things that are delicious on pasta, and in salads.)

“OH, my God, this sucks.” Why Writing For Syndicated Comic Strips Is Extra Hard

The other night I watched some TV sitcoms and took note of the dialogue, and the situations the characters found themselves in. I was completely jealous of what the writers were able to get away with. They got to say “gay” (and not to describe someone who’s happy), “crap”, and “Oh, my God”. They also got to freely put their characters in situations that acknowledged the existence of sex, racial differences, and religion. You might think I’d been watching something new. Nope. I was watching vintage family television programming from the 70s and 80s. I was watching, in other words, the often lame humor of yesterday’s entertainment.
